I try to avoid saying “how long is a piece of string?” but the life of a Yurt really does depend on a number of factors including…
- The environment its put up in, the conditions like the weather is crucial, how much humidity and the temperature changes, How much UV, Do you wash it at times, are small maintenance repairs kept up??
- Can you keep it as dry as possible with plenty of air around it?
- Not under trees or in shade for long periods?
- Will you clean and wash it once a year?
- Will you need to re-apply a water-proof/mould inhibitor every 2 years??
- How often will you be using it?
- Will you have heating in it?
- What quality canvas did you get?
If you can answer all of these satisfactorily, then my Yurts will give you about 8 to 10 Years on the outside canvas and Wool Felt (synthetic felt will last longer)and about 12 to 14 years on the wooden parts. It really depends on all these things and more.
If for example you choose a high quality canvas, a polyester/cotton blend that is mould and rot proofed and of more that 450gsm then it will last up to 30% longer than most. But of course, you pay more to get it, usually about 30 to 40% more in price. So it could be seen as an investment at the time. There are links I have posted to the care of canvas, including Dragonwing.com
Like so many things that are organic and hand made they will need running repairs and maintenance, common sense and an understanding of that type of impermanence in temporary structures.

Looking at different and unusual form of accomodation for quirky B&B. Wondering about your yurts?
